Electrical Wiring

Electrical wiring is another priority for initial investment. An outline of key electrical wiring specifications saves you time, money and the inconvenience of rewiring your house in the future. Ensure your builder incorporates your electrical needs into the timeline before the walls are installed. This will help to avoid having to rip out drywall, cabinetry or wall and ceiling molding later and subsequently void your builder warranties. Because there are so many electrical options, it is best to consult with your new home designer to select the options that best fit your lifestyle and needs.

Consider the following questions so you can properly plan for the wiring:

  • Will you need additional phone lines for a home office?
  • Which rooms would like cable outlets in?
  • Will you have a security system, sound system, intercom systems and/or an integrated home network?
  • What type of lighting options do you want in each room? (dimmers, recessed lighting, etc.)
  • In which rooms would you like wall-mounted switches or remote controls for lighting or ceiling fans?
“It's important to make your electrical wiring decisions during the initial design phase, when you can take advantage of the opportunity customize your house and have the builder's licensed subcontractors perform the work. Plus, the builder usually provides warranties for all work and materials.”
